Silence and absence are for SPECTRAL UNIT a creative dimension. In an era where everything must appear, show itself, emerge in a chaos of signs, for us hide, fall silent, amplify the passing of time, grant us half-light, reflection, the emptiness of words are the modus operandi we have given ourselves. Waiting is part of what it means to follow this project, and part of what it means for us to work on it. We refuse frenzy and saturation as a dimension.
After our debut album Preternatural, the recording of the new album is complete, and we believe this work represents a transformation in our artistic research. It is the submerged signal, the buried sound of a creative path that asks the listener not to cross algorithms, not to stumble through sounds and images in an infinite sequence of memoryless stimuli, but to dig and rediscover the meaning of standing inside a sonic space and inhabiting it consciously.
The active minds are Adi Newton, Michael Somerset and Enrico Marani. Michael is a new presence in the SPECTRAL UNIT path: anyone familiar with Clock DVA knows exactly who we mean. His contribution on percussion and wind instruments was decisive in defining the sound of the new album. The substance of who we are is impermanent, subject to continuous mutation, and so the contributions to SPECTRAL UNIT are equally mutable, open to the unexpected, to experimentation, to encounters with the unforeseeable.
The new album represents a clear step forward in our research: an electronic jazz that creates a conjunction between the digital and the analogue, letting different traditions coexist, collide and find each other again, giving rise to a distinctive identity that reaffirms our will to go beyond genres and to challenge the listener. We offer no consoling horizons; our intention is to stimulate whoever listens. Art must strike, disorient, unsettle, break the continuity of apparent meaning and the anesthetized existence in which we are immersed.
This new project wants to be a tear, a rupture, a parallel dimension, an apparition.
Adi Newton’s voice is present in several tracks. This is not a purely instrumental record: his vocal presence adds a further layer to a music that already moves between different dimensions, outlining a narrative that alludes to the themes from which these compositions originated. For us, the dimension of the visual arts is inseparable from that of sound. SPECTRAL UNIT has always sought a synthesis between music and the arts, a form of synaesthesia between sounds and images, further develops this research — a fact that will become explicit in how the work presents itself once it is available.
Adi Newton has created a series of original paintings conceived specifically for these compositions. These are not illustrations of the music, but parallel and coherent works, born of the same creative impulse: they are that same impulse in another form. Together, images and sounds form a unified organism — never illustrative, but cohesive, the visual form of the sonic presence. The album will also be accompanied by 2 essays and notes that will serve as the theoretical space of this apparition, its taking shape as an idea.
We are also considering the possibility of publishing a limited artistic edition of the album accompanied by prints of Adi Newton’s paintings, produced in a limited run, so as to offer a layered experience that goes beyond the mere dimension of the industrial product, realizing a true artistic object.
Here, and on our other channels, we will provide further information from now on and leading to , We are currently working with our label to define release dates and preorder details. We will promptly share every update with everyone following SPECTRAL UNIT, as soon as the timing and organizational aspects are finalized.
