The first album by SPECTRAL UNIT, Preternatural (Rizosfera 2023), has been sold out for over a year, and the idea of a reissue has been on our minds—to once again offer those compositions and the poetics from which they emerged. Our project is stronger because of those ideas, and we are motivated to embark on new expressive paths, including this platform, where the connection between creator and listener is direct, without intermediaries and under our full control—especially thanks to that beginning.
We believe that no musical work is ever truly complete, but rather subject to continuous transformation—shaped by the different interpretations of those who listen and by how we ourselves understand and reinterpret it. Everything changes across time and space. Preternatural carries a distinct poetics, rooted in interests that have been part of us even before SPECTRAL UNIT took shape. Here, we have decided to present mutations of those tracks—not because we believe the originals need to be altered, but to rediscover that same spirit in a different form, allowing a twin of the original piece to emerge from our history as musicians. In an apparent similarity, this twin develops even radical differences.
MAPS OF A DISTANT NEBULAE (astral jazz mutation) is the first in a series of mutations that preserve the poetics and programmatic meanings of the original track, yet after more than a year, manifest in a different way—because we ourselves have changed. Here, then, is a twin, a double, an apparent copy, which in reality is a doppelgänger, a spectral duplicate of the original. But which one is the original, and which one is the duplicate?
